Graham Brady backs calls to move Channel 4 to Salford Quays

Local MP Graham Brady has backed calls for Channel 4 to move North to MediaCityUK at Salford Quays.

The government has recently held a 12-week consultation concerning the future location of the state-owned broadcaster, which is currently based in London.

The government has already stated its intention to relocate Channel 4, including the policy as a manifesto commitment.

The BBC already employs over 3,000 people at MediaCityUK

And now Brady, who was recently returned as MP for Altrincham and Sale West, has tabled a House of Commons Motion backing the policy in favour of a move to MediaCityUK, where the BBC and ITV already have a significant presence.

The motion says: “This House welcomes the Government’s determination to move broadcaster Channel Four Television out of London; notes that Media City describes itself as a waterfront destination for Manchester with digital creativity, learning and leisure at heart and recommends that Channel 4 finds a welcome home there by relocating to Media City to join the Northern Powerhouse of Broadcasting.”

Altrincham and Sale West MP Graham Brady

Brady, who is supported by fellow Greater Manchester MP William Wragg, said: “Instead of paying for an expensive premises in central London, it is a much better idea for Channel Four to be based in the North West and to take advantage of all the talent and fantastic facilities we have to offer.”

Channel 4 recently released its response to the consultation, outlining its desire to stay in the capital.

It stated: “Channel 4 makes a significant contribution to talent, audiences and the independent production sector in the Nations and Regions, spending over £1.5bn on TV production in the Nations and Regions over the last decade. In 2016 this was at a high of £169m, £36m of which was spent in the devolved Nations. External analysis commissioned by Channel 4 calculates this activity as supporting around 3,000 jobs in the Nations and Regions.”

New 1930s-style Altrincham and Hale posters released – and here’s how you can buy one

Two 1930s-style railway posters promoting Altrincham and Hale have been produced as part of a new exhibition to be held next month at a museum in Northwich.

Between August 8th and September 3rd, the Lion Salt Works Museum will host an exhibition of 13 colourful railway posters promoting the Mid Cheshire Railway Line.

Produced by the Mid Cheshire Community Rail Partnership and designed by artist Nicky Thompson of Chester-based Lemondrop Creative, the posters are intended to evoke the Golden Age of British travel and encourage holiday-makers in the North West and beyond to embrace the spirit of adventure and explore the sites of the region by rail.

Places featured on the posters include Altrincham, Hale, Chester, Northwich and Knutsford.

The 1930s-style Altrincham poster

There is no charge to view the exhibition and regular tours will take place.

Cllr Louise Gittins, Cabinet Member for Communities and Wellbeing, Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: “The railway posters of the 1930s hailed a new era of train travel and this imaginative campaign featuring fourteen railway stops on the Mid-Cheshire Railway line hopes to trigger a similar reaction.

“I think this is a marvellous initiative and an excellent way of showcasing the beautiful attractions of the region. Not only can visitors view the exhibition free-of-charge at the Lion Salt Works Museum, but they can also buy their own copies of the posters and postcards.

“They make an excellent present and I am sure there will be high demand for them.”

The Hale version

Artist Nicky Thompson, who owns and manages Chester design studio Lemondrop Creative, said: The posters draw on the work of Frank Henry Mason, one of the most influential poster designers of this era. In their day, these posters with their strikingly bold colours and experimental flat design were quite different and new.

“What is unarguable is that they were highly effective in creating an aspirational sense of adventure that drew city-dwellers to explore the countryside. I’m an Ellesmere Port lad, and as a Cheshire resident, it has been a total pleasure to produce the artwork for these posters. I hope everyone enjoys them.”

How to buy them: Posters will be available for purchase at the Lion Salt Works Museum in A3 and A2 size for £5 and £10 respectively. Postcards sets will also be available of 12 posters. If attractions across the region would like to stock these posters and postcards, call Sally Buttifant on 01244 976788 or 0773 652 3863.

“Please come and try us – not many towns this size have a beautiful period ballroom and jazz club, you’ll be surprised. Intimate and fun, if you love live music, we have something for you.”

Also back are the popular dancing classes, on what is the largest dedicated sprung dance floor in the area.

Dancing classes are back at the Cinnamon Club this week

If you’d like to try modern jive – “as sexy as salsa and just as fun” – then you can drop in to beginners’ classes every Tuesday and Thursday, from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. No need to book.

Or if you’ve been inspired to take up Latin and Ballroom after watching Strictly, you can learn the basic steps of the Waltz, Tango, Jive and Cha Cha on every Sunday and Wednesday, from 6pm to 10pm.

If singing is more your thing, the Cinnamon Club has two choirs every Wednesday.

The daytime choir, at 1pm, involves over 40 singers lead by Clare Morel from The Music Place and Richard Wetherall on piano. There’s no need to audition and coffee and cake is included. The evening choir is from 8 to 9pm.

“Hilarious” comedy It Runs in the Family to open at Altrincham Garrick next week

Hilarious comedy It Runs in the Family, from the master of farce Ray Cooney, is to open at the Altrincham Garrick next week.

Described by the Sunday Times as “a must for the bruised in spirit and the young at heart”, the play runs from Monday 25th September to Saturday 30th September.

Directed by Alan Clements, it tells the story of Dr Mortimer, a leading surgeon in London’s most prestigious hospital who is delivering the “Lecture of the Year” to a hundred of the world’s leading physicians when a distraught former mistress turns up.

The ex-mistress then informs him that their past union resulted in a baby boy who is now a strapping 16-year-old – and waiting outside to be introduced.

There is only one course of action – send for faithful friend, Dr Bonney.

Typical Cooney-esque complications ensue involving a police sergeant, Dr Mortimer’s wife, a severe hospital matron and Dr Bonney’s mother, although why Dr Bonney has to impersonate both matron and Al Jolson is too complicated to explain here and you will simply have to come along to find out.

The show is sponsored by Tom Howley. Season-opener Ladies in Lavender completed a successful run on Saturday.

For tickets, contact the box office on 0161 928 1677 or online at the Altrincham Garrick website

Award-winning TV series and book Wolf Hall set for six-night run at the Altrincham Garrick

You may have read the Booker Prize-winning novel. You probably watched the multi-award winning BBC TV series.

Now experience the epic story on stage, as the Garrick brings you the unmissable historical drama Wolf Hall – only the second time this play has ever been produced, anywhere, following the memorable 2014 Royal Shakespeare Company production that toured to the West End and Broadway.

Adapted by Mike Poulton from Hilary Mantel’s original book, this compelling and brilliantly humorous play traces the ascent of the wily tactician Thomas Cromwell from his gutter origins in Putney to the height of power in the court of Henry VIII.

With a minimal set allowing an array of memorable characters to cut back and forth quickly through a variety of settings, from palace to street to Thames barge, Wolf Hall promises to be a stunning visual treat, due to the spectacular range of incredible costumes created by the Garrick’s own wardrobe genius, Mike Shaw, and his talented team – seeing these will be worth the admission price alone!

Wolf Hall runs from Monday 6th to Saturday 11th November. For tickets, ring the box office on 0161 928 1677 or book online here. Monday night is already sold out.

Classic Alan Ayckbourn play Season’s Greetings to open at the Altrincham Garrick

$

0

The pre-pantomime show at the Garrick is one of Alan Ayckbourn’s very best comedies, Season’s Greetings.

For everyone who sees it, Christmas will never be quite the same again

Shortly after writing it, Ayckbourn described the play in the following terms: “The family reunion, the pile of brightly wrapped presents; the log roaring in the grate; a children’s puppet show and a Boxing Day tea; turkey dinners; paper hats; crackers and streamers; around the base of the gaily decorated tree an extramarital relationship; a couple of stray gunshots in the hall. All the ingredients for a traditional English Christmas.”

The Garrick has put on this play twice before but with a gap of 20 years it was time for a revival. One of the cast actually appeared in the last production (though playing a different character) as did director, John Chidgey, who promises an evening full of laughs, and it being Christmas, tears as well.

Season’s Greetings runs from Monday 20th to Saturday 25th November, with Monday night already sold out. This production is sponsored by Cresta World Travel.

For tickets, ring the box office on 0161 928 1677 or book online here.

Altrincham company plays starring role in acclaimed BBC Christmas advert

An Altrincham company has played in a starring role in the BBC’s acclaimed Christmas advert.

Puppet makers MacKinnon & Saunders, based on Seamons Road, made the characters in the animated ad.

Created by BBC in-house and produced by Blinkink, ‘The Supporting Act’ follows a 10-year-old girl as she tries to convince her dad to take an interest in her Christmas talent show and has been described by many as the festive ad of the year.

Watch the ad here:

The girl is shown practicing at the supermarket, in the kitchen and on the street in preparation for the most important dance performance of her life.

Her dad is always with her, but is busy with work and fails to notice until the moment that really matters when he helps his daughter remember her dance moves in a touching show of ‘oneness’.

MacKinnon & Saunders said it was “a bit stunned” by how its puppets had been realised in the finished film.

Also involved in the production of the film was Stockport-based Clockwork Frog Films, who designed and built the set.

MacKinnon & Saunders’ previous credits include Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, and Frankenweenie.

Everyman reveals plan to open cinema in former JJB Sports unit in Altrincham town centre

Everyman is planning to open a cinema in the former JJB Sports unit in Altrincham town centre.

The boutique cinema chain, which has 22 venues across England, is working up proposals ahead of submitting a planning application to Trafford Council for a four-screen cinema in the currently vacant unit at 74-88 George Street.

The proposed cinema would be accessible both from New Market Square and George Street, and would be the second cinema in Altrincham after Vue on Denmark Street.

Earlier this week, Everyman revealed that it had exchanged contracts on an unspecified Altrincham site earmarked for a four-screen cinema that it hoped to open in 2018.

Chief executive Crispin Lilly said: “We’re so excited to create something special in Altrincham. Our focus is really on experience, from a fabulous bar and food and drink menu, including lovely wines and hand rolled pizzas, to comfy sofa seating and a great programme of film and events.

A CGI of the proposed Everyman Cinema on George Street

“We aim to make every guest’s visit special no matter what they choose to watch, and make them fall in love with a night at the cinema.”

David Hopps, executive member for housing and strategic planning at Trafford Council, said: “We’re excited to be welcoming Everyman to Trafford. They promise to offer an experience that is very different and will hopefully appeal to regular moviegoers, as well as people who don’t normally visit the cinema.”

The redevelopment of 74-84 George Street is being undertaken by Merepark on behalf of Altrincham Regeneration. Two additional retail/leisure units, spanning 4,000 sq ft and 5,000 sq ft, are also available for letting.

The news would represent a significant boost for the southern end of George Street after a spate of big-name arrivals at the other end, including Flannels, Bistrot Pierre, Paperchase and JD Sports.

Classic Agatha Christie whodunnit Go Back for Murder opens at Altrincham Garrick on January 29th

One of Agatha Christie’s lesser known murder mystery plays opens at the Altrincham Garrick on Monday 29th January.

Go Back for Murder, which will run until Saturday 3rd February, was adapted by the Queen of Crime in 1960 from her earlier book, Five Little Pigs, in which Hercule Poirot set out to unravel the mystery presented by pretty young Carla Le Marchant.

But in the stage version, Poirot is written out, and Carla herself seeks to find out ‘whodunnit’, helped by young lawyer Justin Fogg.

‘Go Back for Murder’ is the complex story of a murder revisited years after the supposed murderer has been found guilty and hanged. So, we know who did it and how… or we think we do, until the convicted woman’s daughter returns from Canada to rake over the coals and uncover the truth.

An unusual take on the traditional murder mystery, the action of the play slips seamlessly from past to present, examining the danger of relying on personal testimony warped by time, prejudice and perception. By studying each suspect’s testimony, and the various inconsistencies between them, the drama arrives at a disturbing and terrible truth.
